Fast Parametric Learning with Activation Memorization
نویسندگان
چکیده
Neural networks trained with backpropagation often struggle to identify classes that have been observed a small number of times. In applications where most class labels are rare, such as language modelling, this can become a performance bottleneck. One potential remedy is to augment the network with a fast-learning non-parametric model which stores recent activations and class labels into an external memory. We explore a simplified architecture where we treat a subset of the model parameters as fast memory stores. This can help retain information over longer time intervals than a traditional memory, and does not require additional space or compute. In the case of image classification, we display faster binding of novel classes on an Omniglot image curriculum task. We also show improved performance for wordbased language models on news reports (GigaWord), books (Project Gutenberg) and Wikipedia articles (WikiText-103) — the latter achieving a state-of-the-art perplexity of 29.2.

متن کاملFast-TIPL Occurs for Salient Images without a Memorization Requirement in Men but Not in Women
Recent research of task-irrelevant perceptual learning (TIPL) demonstrates that stimuli that are consistently presented at relevant point in times (e.g. with task-targets or rewards) are learned, even in the absence of attention to these stimuli. However, different research paradigms have observed different results for how salient stimuli are learned; with some studies showing no learning, some...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effects of Rote and Contextualized Memorization on Iranian Elementary EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Development
It is obvious that vocabulary lies in the center of language learning and communication. This issue shows that vocabulary has a vital role in mastering all the skills of a language. Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLS) facilitate the process of learning lexical items. The present study investigated the role of two specific strategy types in vocabulary learning, including rote and contextualized...
متن کاملThe Effect of Mnemonic Key Word Method on Vocabulary Learning and Long Term Retention
Most of the studies on the key word method of second/foreign language vocabulary learning have been based on the evidence from laboratory experiments and have primarily involved the use of English key words to learn the vocabularies of other languages. Furthermore, comparatively quite limited number of such studies is done in authentic classroom contexts. The present study inquired into the eff...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effect of Color on Memorization and Trust in E-Learning:
The objective of this chapter is to study the effect of the color of e-learning platforms as an atmospheric variable of the interface on the learning process. It focuses on two important variables: memorization and trust. First, it aims to explore the effect of color on the memorization of the educational content available in an e-learning platform. It investigates if the colored appearance of ...
